Football Is In The Air

by Tom King

It's Game Day for high school football teams around the area tonight. With the exception of last weekend's scrimmages the teams have been beating up on each other for a few weeks and now get to perform under the lights for the first time. There are some interesting matchups right out of the chute too. Amherst is the only area team coming off a championship and they host Rosholt. Edgar, Stratford and Marathon all begin with home games...and Wausau Newman opens at home against Greenwood-Granton. In the Valley Football Association the local teams cross over divisions and face each other as old rivalries are renewed. Wausau West plays at Marshfield, DC Everest travels to Stevens Point and Wausau East is at Wisconsin Rapids.

You can hear the DCE-Spash and Wausau East-Rapids games on Foxsports 1390 & FM 93.9 after Brewer baseball. The Brewer-Reds game is on because WSAU will be carrying the Packer game...so expect the Everest football game to air around 9pm and the East game to be on around 11pm. The games will also be available as podcasts on Foxsportswausau.com and wsau.com.

This will be my 19th year of broadcasting Wausau East sports on the radio and it will be interesting to see what new coach Scott Mallien has put together with a very green Lumberjack squad.

The national TV people are why the Packers are playing on a Friday night. You would hope that the pros could leave Friday night to the high schools but with big money involved that's not going to happen.

The Packers face Russel Wilson and the Seahawks tonight. I'm sure the fans will welcome Golden Tate and the Seahawks with disdain after what happened last year. Also jobs will be won and lost in tonights game at RB, OL, DL, DB and kicker.

I'm not going to comment on Braun's so-called apology. It doesnt even come close to how he should have handled it. Whoever is giving him his crisis management advice is really falling down on the job.

Congrats to Cole Nelson of the Wausau Legion baseball team who was named MVP of the State Legion All-Star game which was played last weekend at Miller Park. He had two hits and two rbi's in the game.

Songs of The Day  (from my I-pod)

Margaritaville-Jimmy Buffett (1977) the song that busted Jimmy wide open and has spawned an entire industry of products....Buffett may be the savviest businessman of any musician ever while still having more fun than anyone else too. I believe he returns to Alpine Valley next weekend.

Marianne-Stephen Stills (1971) a track from his second solo LP showing his vocal range
