Links Golf Is An Aquired Taste

by Tom King

The British Open teed off overnight at Muirfield Links Course in Scotland. For many American golf fans who were weaned on lush, green, water-filled courses here in the states, a links course tournament can be a grind. the brown, gorse covered courses...the wind...the bump & run style of play...all can be hard for the casual fan to appreciate. But since this is where the game of golf was invented...many other fans embrace the style of play we will see this week. Phil Mickelson is coming off a victory at the Scottish Open last week...Tiger Woods says his elbow is better...Rory McElroy will try and shake off the thinking that his romance with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki has dulled his fire...and Ernie Els will try and catch lightning in a bottle two years in a row. It should be a good show.

The Woodchucks got a complete game shut-out from Matt Ditman last night in a 12-0 rout of Wisconsin Rapids. Matt Tellor and Jake Jeffries hit homers. The two teams play tonight at Rapids. They will square off again Friday night in Wausau.

Tonight Athletic Park will have the Wausau Post 10 Legion Bulldogs in their final home game of the season against Stevens Point...game time is 7pm.

If you like jazz and beer...you'll want to check out the Sid Kyler Jazzfest Friday and Saturday at the Bull Falls Brewery in Wausau. Different genres of jazz both inside the taproom and outside in the beer garden Friday night and all day & night on Saturday. Sid's band (a long time Wausau staple) will play Saturday night at 8...I'll see you there for some excellent music and excellent brews.
