Party Like It's 1979

by Tom King

I owe alot to the college radio station at UWSP. Without 90FM I would not have had the background and training to have been able to do this for most of the last 40 years. This week WWSP is having an alumni reunion/fund raiser of sorts. Various folks who worked at the station years ago have paid for the chance to return to the air-waves and re-live some of the glory days. I'm giving you a heads-up that I will be on the air on Saturday afternoon from 1-3 pm. I will be playing the music that you would have heard during an air-shift when I was music director at the station from 1977-79. You can listen live or go online at uwsp.edu/WWSP. I worked and learned from alot of talented people back in the 70's. Guys like Chris Shebel & Scotty Krueger and Tim Bedore. Gene Mueller parlayed his talents into a long running gig in Milwaukee. The skills I learned led me to a weekend gig at WIFC back in the late 70's. I was terrible. But guys like Tom Collins(who was actually Tim Bedore's older brother) Jim Owen, Sebastian Stone and Tom Hudson (what I consider WIFC's classic lineup) never got tired of me hanging around the studios...asking questions, watching, listening and learning. Yeah, I owe alot to 90.FM...and for those who only know the station through the annual Trivia contest...this week gives you a chance to hear the station as it was....when it became the 'album alternative' to the big boys...and where it trained and nurtured generation after generation of top notch radio pros.

Part of the reunion week is the band "Heartsfield" playing a gig at Rookies Sports Bar Thursday night. Remember the song "Music Eyes"? I believe there may also be some glasses raised at Ella's on Saturday night. Have you been to Ella's lately? It looks like it has been frozen in time...looks the same...smells the same as 1979. No corn beef sandwiches anymore however.

The Woodchucks keep on winning. They still control their own destiny and play a Doubleheader today vs Green Bay. The first game is an afternoon affair at Athletic Park at 1pm and the 2nd game is tonight in Green Bay at 7:05. Both games can be heard on Foxsports Radio AM1390 & FM 93.9.
