UNDATED (WSAU) It was a year-ago yesterday that the Weston prayer parent Dale Neumann was convicted in the death of his 11-year-old daughter Kara. His wife Leilani was found guilty at a separate trial two months earlier. They didn't realize Kara suffered from treatable juvenile diabetes. They prayed over her until she died, instead of taking her to a doctor. Both parents were convicted of second-degree reckless homicide in separate trials.

The Wausau Daily Herald reports that neither parent has begun serving any jail time. The sentences were delayed until their appeals were heard. The Neumanns have cooperated with corrections officers, and are taking part in the community service portions of their sentences.

Their appeals have been bogged down in legal and court delays. The court appointed separate attorneys for each of the Neumanns, who can't pay for their appeals. Dale Neuman's lawyer hasn't received a transcript of the trial yet. Both lawyers don't expect to get key evidence until September.

The case was controversial because of Wisconsin's faith healing laws. The convictions tested the boundaries of when parents can opt for prayer while denying their children medical treatment.
