MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WTAQ) - Milwaukee Police now say a man who was rescued from the top of a downtown building on Wednesday was despondent – and he was not a bank robbery suspect.
Initial media reports said the 20-year-old man robbed a Wells Fargo bank, and was fleeing from officers when he ran to a ledge near the top of a building on West Wisconsin Avenue. But officials now say the bank was never robbed, and the man does not have a criminal record.
A police negotiator tried to persuade the man not to jump -- and after lightning started to hit the tops of the downtown buildings, the man agreed to have a rope put around his waist, and be hauled to safety. Police said the man was appeared to be suicidal. He was taken to a mental health center.
