PHOENIX, Ariz. (WTAQ) - Key parts of Arizona's controversial immigration law have been blocked by a federal judge in Phoenix.
U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton blocked a part of the law that requires police to determine the immigration status of a person who was detained or arrested.
Another measure requiring immigrants to carry immigration registration paperwork was also blocked. Bolton also denied a portion of the law that makes it a crime for an illegal immigrant to seek and perform work.
Bolton's ruling comes after multiple hearings in federal court on challenges to the Arizona law.
During one of those hearings, prosecutors for the U.S. government said immigration is a federal matter, and the Arizona law would trump federal law.
There were also fears that the measure would lead to racial profiling. Supporters of the law said it only reinforces federal statutes and prohibits racial profiling.
