APPLETON, Wis. (WTAQ) - The defense in the trial of a former Appleton firefighter accused of murdering his estranged wife throws a curveball Tuesday. Scott Schmidt, charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of Kelly Wing-Schmidt, took the stand. The first question from his attorney, Greg Petit, "Did you kill your wife?"
Schmidt answered, "That day I did. I don't know who that person was that day."
Petit also made the call to play Schmidt's confession to Grand Chute police officer Scott Dontje and Detective Bartlien of the Grand Chute PD. The tape shows after investigators left the room, Schmidt is seen crying saying, "Kelly, I love you so much. I just wanted to be your husband."
The 39-year-old also is charged with the attempted homicide of her mother Barbara Wing. Earlier, a key witness called was a former boyfriend of Kelly Wing-Schmidt as well as Schmidt's friends and co-workers. The prosecution will get to question Schmidt today and there's a chance both sides will begin their closing arguments.
