LA CROSSE, Wis. (WTAQ) - A temporary employment agency in La Crosse will pay $75,000 to settle a federal discrimination suit. Officials said Olsten Staffing Services did not refer Zachary Schaefer for a temporary production job at a food manufacturer because the applicant is deaf. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said hearing was not a requirement of the job, and Schaefer should have gotten a chance to get that job. Olsten is based in New York State.
It agreed to pay Schaefer $5,000 for lost pay and $70,000 in other damages. And it agreed to train its employees about following the Americans with Disabilities Act. Olsten said it did nothing wrong, however – and it says it provides a lawful work environment.
