MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - For the second time in a row, a Gruyere cheese from Switzerland won the World Championship Cheese Contest in Madison. Cedric Fragniere made the cheese that was judged the best Thursday among 2,300 entries from 20 nations. The judges hailed the hard cheese for its light herbs and its creamy texture. A Gruyere also won the previous world competition 2 years ago in Wisconsin’s capital. Thursday’s runner-up is a smear-ripened hard cheese that was also made in Switzerland. 78 cheeses made today’s final round of judging, and 21 were from Wisconsin – the most of any state.
