Weston passes budget, service cut details coming

WESTON, WI (WSAU) -  The Village of Weston passed a budget Monday night, but residents and board members still don’t know exactly which services will be cut to balance it.

Daniel Guild is the Village Administrator.  He says passing the budget in light of an 800-thousand dollar deficit took a combination of things.  "It was a combination of service reduction and working on some revenue enhancements, as well as cooperation on some issues like the bus and some other items."  Guild says Village residents can expect cuts in services, but the board doesn’t know exactly where the cuts will take place.  "We've been having some internal discussions about that, but nothing that we've publicly released yet."

One of the budget challenges is reinstating bus service as demanded in a spring referendum. Guild says the board will be putting a special fee on the tax bills to pay for the bus service.  "We're planning to fund the bus through a transportation utility.  It is a fee that is charged to property owners for the transportation network in the community."

The Administrator says the decision by Schofield and Rothschild to go with the bus service proposal reduced Weston’s financial obligation from $120,000 down to $45,000.

Guild says residents can expect service cut options to be announced, and opportunities for the public to speak out about these cuts early next year.
