GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The great winter storm and blizzard of 2012 has arrived in northeast Wisconsin.

The storm which is already hitting the region will pack heavy snow and very strong winds. A Winter Storm Warning and Blizzard Warning is in effect for Thursday.

FOX 11 reports that snow is starting to accumulate in Fond du Lac, Oshkosh and Appleton at 1:30 am and the first flakes started flying in Green Bay. Some areas may have up to 4 inches on the ground by daybreak.

Snow will be heavy at times Thursday and most locations will see between 10 and 14 inches by Friday morning.

The heaviest accumulations of 14 inches or more will be in a stripe from western Manitowoc County and Calumet County southwestward through Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, and parts of Green Lake, Dodge, and Columbia counties.

North and northwest winds will also increase resulting in possible blizzard conditions for a time. Travel will be hazardous all day in Wisconsin as well as Iowa, Illinois and Michigan.

Travel may even be impacted on Friday although the snow accumulation will have ended. If you have travel planned for these areas in the aforementioned time frames, you may want to consider alternate plans.
