STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU)  -  Stevens Point is preparing to submit a grant application to study contamination on a downtown site. Community Development Director Michael Ostrowski says the 4-acre vacant site that used to be part of the Lullaby Furniture Company has some contamination, but city officials don’t know how much.

Ostrowski says if awarded, this grant can help find out what they’re dealing with. He says, “This grant allows us to do a couple of phase one and phase two (studies) on the property to learn a little bit more about what the actual contamination levels are and what it takes to clean that stuff up.”

The City’s Finance Committee passed a resolution Monday night to proceed with the grant application. Ostrowski is optimistic they could see grant money early next year to pay for site studies. “After the approval of Council, we would be able to apply for the funds. There is no deadline for the grant, however, there are finite monies available of about $400,000 so we would apply probably in December and hear back in early or late January.”

The Lullaby site is across Centerpoint Drive immediately north of the old mall, which Ostrowski says is making progress. “We’re moving forward on 3rd Street. We hope to have that completed by Thursday. Demolition continues on the remainder of the mall.”

Also, discussions will take place Tuesday with Madison real estate developer Sara Investments concerning the portion of the mall formerly occupied by Dunham Sports.

Crews are still working to seal the opening on the east side of the old Penney’s wing, which will become the new home of Mid-State Technical College.

(Note:  The Lullaby site is directly across from the former mall between Centerpoint Drive (Highway 66), 3rd Street, and Portage Street as seen on the map above.)
