WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) The DNR and local leaders are planning a special ceremony and celebrating to mark the re-use of the old Holtz Krause landfill in Wausau. The city and Marathon County are turning the landfill into a soccer complex.
The county paid $127,000 for the land. The city contributed $100,000. The Holtz-Krause steering committee - which had some money left over from an environmental monitoring fund - paid $45,000.
The prep-work for the new soccer fields will begin next year. Those fields will be ready for play in the spring of 2014.
The DNR will send a delegation to Wausau next week to mark the sale. They needed to sign a waiver to limit the liability of the new owners if there are future environmental problems at the site. The event will be held at the county office building at 212 River Drive in Wausau on Tuesday at 10:30am.
