WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - Granite Peak Ski Area is making snow... and lot’s of it. Manager Vicki Baumann says the snow guns are always on as they get ready for opening weekend. “We’re really working around the clock here twenty four hours. We’ve got a crew here making lots and lots of snow.”
Baumann says last week’s warm weather means only part of the mountain will be ready to ski on for their Saturday season opener. “We really anticipate about ten runs, which is the center of the mountain. Then we will be moving all of the guns to the east and start making snow over there.”
Granite Peak has several lifts named after famous reindeer. Baumann says one of the new lifts this year will give you more time on the snow. “Donner was our triple chair over there. It was a nine to ten minute ride up the mountain, and we have replaced it with Dasher. It’s a new high-speed quad, about a three minute ride, so you’re going to get some more ski time in and less ride time.”
Snowboarders are not left out on opening weekend. Baumann says some of their favorite spots will be ready. “This weekend we will have features on Sugar Maple, our terrain park, and Aspen, another terrain park. There will be some features out there for the snowboarders.”
Baumann says frequent skiers generally save money by using season passes. They also have several low-cost weekday specials throughout the season. Baumann anticipates that all runs will be snow covered and ready for skiing by Christmas.
Granite Peak will be open this Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Next week, they will be open evenings Tuesday through Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. They will be open every day starting Saturday December 8th.
