WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - The absence of a key witness has delayed the preliminary hearing for a man accused of causing a woman’s death in a February crash. 21-year-old Tyler Deal of La Crosse was in Marathon County Court Tuesday, charged with homicide by drunken driving, homicide by negligent driving and two drug-related charges. The missing witness, Nicole Kopp, was served a subpoena September 6th. Attempts will be made to locate Kopp and reschedule Deal’s preliminary hearing within the next ten days.
The complaint says Deal had a point-09 blood alcohol content and was under the influence of marijuana February 26th when he crashed into a utility pole along Highway V near Spencer. 22-year-old Paige Metz of Loyal was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deal remains free on a 20-thousand dollar cash bond. He could spend 35 years in prison if convicted.
