MONROE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Part of a western Wisconsin highway was closed Friday morning, after a smoky grass fire made it hard for drivers to see – and a number of them got into crashes.

Monroe County Sheriff Pete Quirin said an unknown number of people were injured in some of the accidents on Highway 173 near Warrens.

Officials said the grass fire blew heavy smoke over the roadway.

Highway 173 was closed from Highway 21 to Monroe County Trunk HH, and a detour was set up.

The road is closed about 8 miles southeast of the popular Warrens Cranberry Festival, which started Friday morning and runs through the weekend.
