Schaffausen jury selection completed, deliberation starts Tuesday morning

HUDSON, WI (WSAU) -  The jury has been selected to hear the civil trial to determine if a man was insane when he killed his three daughters. Aaron Schaffhausen has already pled guilty to stabbing his three young daughters to death last year.

St. Croix County Clerk of Courts Lori Meyer says jury selection was completed late Monday afternoon. “We ended up with six men and nine women. Three will be alternates, but we won’t tumble to randomly select the three alternates until they’re ready to deliberate.”

Meyer says the jury selection process went smoother than she expected. “Everything went very, very smooth. I guess if there was a surprise, it was that we only struck nine jurors for cause through the process. We had 105 available, we ceded 29, and we had about 50 extra jurors still available.”

The sanity trial is a civil trial, and jurors are not required to have a unanimous decision beyond a reasonable doubt. 10 out of 12 will have to decide Schaffhausen’s mental state based on the majority of evidence.

The trial is expected to last up to three weeks.
