Concealed Carry Weapon classes popular

STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) -  Wisconsin’s concealed carry law allows you to carry a firearm, but you still need the proper training. That training is available through a variety of sources, including gun clubs, firearms dealers, and law enforcement agencies.

Portage County Sheriff’s Detective Wayne Kropidlowski says the concealed carry class they offer just expanded due to high demand. “We had a class size of 40 students at a maximum, because that’s all we could handle. We started taking a waiting list and it got up to 25, so we decided to run a second class.”

Both the original class and the additional second class will be Saturday, April 27th. The morning class from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. is full, but the afternoon class from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. has some openings.

Classes cover the legal requirements, the possible financial requirements if you ever need to use the weapon, and firearm safety. Students also have an opportunity to practice at the firing range with instructors.

Kropidlowski says people considering the purchase of a gun should shop carefully and get good advice, because one size does not fit everyone. “It depends on the research. I’ve been to places where guys recommend a .45 caliber to people, which isn’t a bad gun, but it might not be the right fit for the stature of the individual or even their ability or the training that they’ve had.”

The Portage County classes are taught by Sheriff’s deputies who are certified Department of Justice firearms instructors, and they use the class guidelines needed for the Concealed Carry Weapon permit application.

The cost of the class is $40/student. For more information and to register, call the Sheriff’s Office at 715-346-1443.
