Recycling electronics is the law, not everyone follows it

UNDATED (WXPR) -  As spring cleanup begins, a DNR recycling expert says look for an area recycling place before you toss electronics in the trash.

DNR E-Cycle Coordinator Sarah Murray says state law makes it illegal to throw away electronics. In some communities putting electronics on the curb is a violation of city ordinances and a fine could result. She says there is a quantity of valuable metals, steel, aluminum and some plastics that can be recycled.

Murray says the old TV's have a glass tube that contains lead. She says waste handlers are finding the public trying to sneak the e-waste into the landfill. Murray says the DNR maintains a list of collection sites registered with E-Cycle Wisconsin. The list is on the DNR website.
