Man accused of hate crime in register fire ruled incompetent

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A Green Bay man accused of lighting a register on fire at the Dollar Land store has been ruled incompetent to stand trial.

On Wednesday, Brown County Judge William Atkinson ordered 53-year-old James Parrish to spend up to a year in the custody of the state Department of Health and Family Services.

Parrish is accused of trying to burn down the former Beach Road Liquor store in early March.

He is facing charges of arson with a hate crime enhancer, first-degree recklessly endangering safety and carrying a concealed weapon.

The owners are followers of the Sikh religion.

Parrish allegedly went into the North Irwin Avenue store and poured gas on the cash register, then lit it on fire.

According to the criminal complaint, Green Bay police officers were at Parrish's house twice before the incident for welfare checks.

Parrish told authorities he was going to burn the store's money. He also told police he was a "freedom fighter" and his job was to round up terrorists and torture them.
