Ignoring weed problems will get expensive for Marshfield residents

MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) - Neglecting summertime yard work will cost Marshfield residents more money this year.

That’s due to a vote at Tuesday night’s Common Council meeting that increases fines, and streamlines the enforcement process on properties the city deems unkempt. Marshfield’s Street Superintendent and Weed Commissioner, Brian Panzer, said that he receives around 400 complaints for unkempt property every summer, and most of those are for vacant, foreclosed or rental properties.

Under the new policy, fines increase from $50 to $75 for a first offense, and $90 for subsequent violations. Previously, five days notice was given before the city takes action, but now the city can take action to resolve problems within three days.
