WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - An event takes place tonight to bring increase awareness about sexual assault issues. It’s called the Take Back The Night Rally.
Jessica Lind is the Program Coordinator for The Women’s Community, and says the event starts at 4:00 p.m. "Take Back The Night is something that traditionally happens on college campuses, and we are looking to create awareness about sexual assaults on campus and within our community."
Lind says the statistics for sexual assault are staggering, especially for college aged victims. One in four women in college have been victims of rape. 90% of them knew their assailants. She says on top of that, less than 5% of completed or attempted sexual assaults are reported. "Sexual assault is the most under-reported crime, and we are working to end that, to break the silence and talk about what's happened. Coming to a Take Back The Night rally is the perfect way to do that."
Lind says the Take Back The Night Rally is an opportunity for victims and others to speak out, to seek help if they want it, and to find out what they can do to prevent sexual assault.
The rally takes place at UW Marathon County’s Terrace Room.
