SOMERSET, WI (WTAQ) - Funeral services will be held Thursday for a well-known resort owner in northwest Wisconsin whose rock band once opened at a Beach Boys’ concert in Amery.
63-year-old Billy Raleigh Sr. died last Friday from cancer. He worked since his childhood at his family’s business, the River’s Edge resort on the Apple River near Somerset.
Raleigh became the general manager 20 years ago – and relatives said he oversaw the addition of a campground, plus concerts that attracted thousands of fans. Raleigh and a number of siblings started a rock band in the 1960’s, during his high school years in Maplewood Minnesota.
Pat Raleigh said the group took third in a battle of the bands at the Minnesota State Fair in 1965. A year later, The Raleighs had their biggest gig ever, when they opened for the Beach Boys in Amery.
He served in Vietnam, then returned to River’s Edge where he introduced tableside cooking – the most famous being frog legs.
Billy Raleigh’s funeral begins at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Somerset.
