Jefferson County DA considers run for attorney general

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A third Democrat is thinking about running for Wisconsin attorney general next fall.

Jefferson County District Attorney Susan Happ says she's thinking about joining a Democratic field that includes Milwaukee state Representative Jon Richards and Dane County DA Ismael Ozanne.

Happ tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel she's been approached about running, and she's, "exploring how I can best put my experiences to work for Wisconsin." Happ has been Jefferson County's chief prosecutor since the start of 2009.

If more than one Democrat runs for attorney general, a primary will be held next August. On the Republican side, Waukesha County DA Brad Schimel has a clear path to his party's nomination so far.

The Journal Sentinel said the governor's legal counsel, Brian Hagedorn, thought about challenging Schimel and decided not to. Hagedorn said Schimel would be a great candidate.

The next attorney general will replace Republican J.B. Van Hollen, who's stepping down at the end of next year.
