WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- The holiday season is in full swing, and if you have too much to drink at a local tavern, you've got a Safe Ride Home.
The Safe Ride program is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and Karen Zeller with the Marathon County Tavern League says the scale of the program might surprise you. "Over the past 20 years we've spent over half a million dollars on these safe rides for the 55 thousand people we have given a ride home to."
The program started as a partnership between Central Beer and the Tavern League in 1993, and has become the model for Safe Ride programs across the country. Zeller says the program was slow to start but has taken off. "Once we started doing our promotions, it's grown to an average of 6 to 8 thousand people a year that we give a ride home to."
The process is still the same and provides a sense of security for tavern patrons. "They know that if they did have too much partying going on over the holiday season, if they're at a local tavern they can hook you up with a voucher and give you a ride home."
