PITTSVILLE, Wis. (WSAU) -- One person died from injuries received in a traffic crash near Pittsville Thursday.
Wood County Sheriff’s deputies say the crash happened when a southbound truck was backing up on the shoulder of Highway 80, and the driver then tried to make a U-turn in the path of another southbound vehicle. The second vehicle struck the turning vehicle in the driver’s door.
73-year-old Allen W. Van Natta of Nekoosa was flown by medical helicopter from the scene to St. Joseph’s Hospital. Hospital officials told WSAU he was discharged from the hospital Thursday evening. The Wood County Sheriff’s department confirms Van Natta died at the hospital from his injuries. The Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune reports that Van Natta was backing his vehicle and then making a U-turn maneuver while delivering their newspapers.
69-year-old Brian J. Stefan of Babcock also went to St. Joseph’s hospital, and was treated and released.
Highway 80 was closed for about two hours just south of Meadowlark Lane while emergency crews helped the victims and cleared the scene.
