MOSINEE, WI (WSAU) -  The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation announced the first 20 communities in the “Connect Communities” program for revitalizing their downtowns and urban commercial districts.

Mayor Al Erickson says Mosinee has been working from their long-term development plan towards this goal for the last five years.  He says the Connect Communities program gives Mosinee a chance to share ideas with other similar communities in Wisconsin.

The Mayor believes Mosinee’s national award for the best small town downtown development plan by the American Planning Association prompted state officials to include them in the new group.

Erickson says Mosinee’s development plan includes the whole city and not just one particular area. He also knows future development downtown is likely to include unique stores versus big box retailers.  "We're looking at the City of Mosinee becoming a destination city.  A place where people want to come and visit, either for the quality of our parks and the quality of our festivals and activities, or the unique shops that we're striving to develop for our downtown area."

Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation selected 20 municipalities to participate in the program. Each community needs an organization that focuses on downtown/urban commercial district issues, have certain information technology capability and make a commitment to majority of training opportunities.

WEDC in return will provide them with a range of services and resources including a network group to receive new ideas from others, participation in a Main Street Executive Director Workshop; and an on-site visit from the WEDC to help identify needs offering assistance, and assist with training programs.

The complete list of communities selected to participate in Connect Communities are: Antigo, Berlin, Cambridge, Cashton, Chilton, Crandon, Deerfield, Edgerton, Greenwood, Hartford, Hartland, La Crosse, Menasha, Menomonee Falls, Menomonee, Mosinee, Plymouth, Pulaski, Sheboygan, and Superior.
