NEILLSVILLE, Wis. (WSAU) - Several hundred bicycles will be seen on Wisconsin roadways starting Thursday, pedaling hundreds of miles from all four corners of the state. Their destination is The Highground Veterans Memorial Park in Neillsville on Sunday. Volunteer general manager Kirk Rodman says this is the 29th year for the spectacle which includes, “teenagers all the way up to grandpas an grandmas.” Motorists are being asked to be attentive as they encounter the cyclists to help make the event a safe one.

The annual fundraising event raised $47,000 for the Highground in 2012, and commemorates a ride by The Highground’s founder Tom Miller, who rode one mile for each of the 1,244 people from Wisconsin who died in Vietnam. Rodman says that when Miller got back from that ride with donations he collected along the way, and “The Highground is what happened.” The ride ends at around 11:00 on Sunday, and you’re invited to welcome the riders home to the Highground.

You can still sign-up to participate in the ride through Wednesday by calling The Highground at 715-743-4224.
