MIAMI, FLA (LEARFIELD_WSAU) Ryan Braun says he might sit out tonight, as the Milwaukee Brewers open a three-game series at Miami. His sore right thumb has bothered him for a while, and manager Ron Roenicke said he would consult with general manager Doug Melvin before deciding what to do.
Roenicke removed Braun in the third inning of yesterday’s Milwaukee home win over Philadelphia. The skipper said the five-time All-Star didn’t want to leave the game – but Roenicke felt he had no choice after seeing Braun wince in pain after he struck out in the first inning. He has batted .254 in his last 59 at-bats, and has not homered in his last 16 games. The manager says Braun has been productive but quote, “He’s not the Ryan Braun we usually know.”
Roenicke says he hopes a few days of rest would help Braun’s thumb get better. The skipper says he does not want Braun to go on the disabled list. The Brewers have three straight after taking 3-of-4 from Philadelphia. Miami has a two-game winning streak, after a pair of wins over the New York Mets that lasted a combined 30 innings.
The Marlins are 18-and-44. Their slugger Giancarlo Stanton has been out since April 30th with a strained hamstring – but he could be activated for tonight.
The Brewers are 25-and-37, after winning six-of-their-last-10. Right-hander Yovani Gallardo starts for the Crew tonight against right-hander Ricky Nolasco.
