WESTON, Wis. (WSAU) -- One man is under arrest and authorities are searching for two more people after an incident on Highway 29 Thursday evening.

Wisconsin State Patrol Sergeant Carrie Johnson says she stopped just before 3:00 p.m. to assist a pedestrian along the highway, but it appears she was the last one the man wanted help from. “I was eastbound, and I saw an individual walking on the Interstate, and I just basically pulled over to see if he needed some assistance. As I did, he promptly tossed his backpack that he was in possession of in the weeds. Right then and there, I knew something was a little suspicious at this point.”

The backpack the suspect was carrying contained two loaded handguns and marijuana. “We found two weapons. One was a .45 and one was a .22. The .45 was stolen. We did have a hit on the ATF (records check) on the federal level, so we were able to confiscate them, too.”

The man was walking away from a broken down car a short distance away on the freeway. A man and a woman inside the stalled car fled on foot. “We only have one. We never found the other two. They fled the scene. We did a search. We cordoned off the area. We had K9 involved, however, we were not able to locate the individuals.”

Everest Metro Police Department’s K9 unit detected the scent of drugs in the stalled vehicle, but a search found no additional contraband.

Johnson could not say if the stolen .45 caliber handgun was from one of the two gun store robberies in Wausau and Tomahawk.

The man with the backpack was arrested. A records search revealed he was wanted by the Green Bay police department. For now, he’s in the Marathon County jail awaiting new charges. His name has not yet been released.
