WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- The jury has been selected, and opening statements have begun for the trial of a former Athens basketball coach accused of sexually assaulting an athlete. Rory McKellips is accused of having sexual contact with a teenaged girl three times in a three-month period of time. The criminal complaint also shows text messages were sent back and forth between McKellips and the alleged victim. The complaint also alleges McKellips gave the victim several gifts and one of his cellphones to use.
The complaint was filed against McKellips back in September of 2011. There have been several delays in the trial, which is expected to last about five days.
McKellips has a successful basketball coaching history. Before coaching in Athens, he led the Mosinee girls' basketball team to state five times including the 2000 championship. He also previously coached for Wisconsin Valley Lutheran.
