WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Two teenagers had to be rescued from the water under the Thomas Street Bridge in Wausau this afternoon.
Fire battalion chief Paul Czarapata says a group of teenagers were swimming on the sandbar off of Fern Island when one of them was swept into the current. Another teenager went out to rescue the other one and got caught in the current as well. "The current is really strong. We've had a lot of rain and it's just funneling water past that point."
Czarapata urges teenagers to find somewhere else to swim. "Places like Man Made Lake and other places where the current isn't so strong."
The two teens were pulled from the water with ropes cast from the bridge. A boat was sent out further downstream to make sure no one else was in the water.
