"Koi Herpes" may have caused fish kill in southern Wisconsin

MINERAL POINT, WI (WTAQ) - State officials say a virus might have caused hundreds of carp to die in two lakes in southern Wisconsin.

The fish started turning up dead in mid-June at Ludden Lake near Mineral Point in Iowa County, and at the Marshall Millpond in Marshall in eastern Dane County.

DNR fisheries’ supervisor David Rowe said hundreds of carp died in both waters. He said the fish were probably infected with the “koi herpes” virus during spawning – and a secondary bacterial infection may have killed them.

The fish are being tested as a state lab, and the results are pending.

Rowe is not sure how the virus entered the waters. He advised those cleaning up the dead fish to use gloves and shovels.
