Wisconsin is 2nd worst for Great Lakes beaches water quality

UNDATED, WI (WTAQ) - Swimmers have a one-in-seven-chance of being in unsafe water on the beaches along Wisconsin’s two Great Lakes.

A new study by the Natural Resources Defense Council shows that the Badger State has the nation’s second-worst water quality on its beaches along Lakes Michigan and Superior.

Fourteen-percent of those places had water samples which exceeded national standards for E-coli contamination. None of Wisconsin’s inland lakes were examined.

The South Shore Beach in Milwaukee was among the 11 worst individual beaches in the nation.

Forty-three percent of the study’s water samples exceeded the government’s advisory standard of 235 colony-forming units of E-coli.

Local governments are required to post advisories when samples reach certain levels for different types of pollution.

Beaches must be closed when the samples show over a-thousand colony-forming units per 100-milli-liters of water. The Environmental Protection Agency recently cut funding for a Great Lakes beach-water testing program.
