SUPERIOR, WI (WSAU) - A pipeline company is seeking approval from the State Department to drastically increase the amount of oil from Canada to a Superior Wisconsin refinery.
Enbridge Inc. pipes in oil from Canada's tar sands region to Superior now, but they want to upgrade several pumping stations in Minnesota and Wisconsin to nearly double the amount of oil they move through the existing pipeline. Enbridge also also plans to move more oil to Superior from North Dakota oil fields.
The State Department reported in the Federal Register this past Friday that Enbridge wants to boost capacity from between 450,000 and 500,000 barrels a day to 570,000 a day. Later during phase two of the upgrade, they would be able to increase the flow to nearly 880,000 barrels a day.
