WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Wausau's public health and safety committee is reminding residents the time to register their pets is now.
The committee voted unanimously last night not to extend an amnesty registration period for households that have more than the limit of 2 dogs and 3 cats in the home. Alderman Keene Winter says the state mandated registration date is coming up. "If they license their animals by March 31st, they could be grandfathered and we would not enforce the limit on them." Winter says the city will be stringently enforcing the ordinance once April comes around.
The city has also seen an increase in pet registration following the passing of the pet ordinance last year, but Winters says those numbers are still too low. "We're seeing about 10 percent estimated compliance in the city." Of particular note is the lack of cat registrations or vaccinations that have been recorded with the city.
Residents who want to register the pets can call the city clerk's office at 715-261-6620 or go online to www.petdata.com and register their pets over the internet.
