MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - UW-Madison officials say they’ve made corrections, after a cat was burned in a research lab.
The U.S. Agriculture Department issued a citation, but no penalties were imposed. The USDA said a hand warmer was keeping the cat warm when it slipped onto the animal’s leg and burned it last April.
Eric Sandgren, who heads the UW’s Research Animal Resource Center, said the cat was treated at the time of the injury, and steps were taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
The USDA said it issued the citation after getting a complaint from PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. That group complained about chronic infections and other problems with the UW’s research cats.
