MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - While Supreme Court justices were taking oral arguments on Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act, one Wisconsin senator was in attendance in the gallery.
Newly-elected senator Tammy Baldwin praised the court yesterday after spending her morning in the gallery. The Court heard arguments on both sides of the Defense of Marriage Act. Baldwin says it's an important day. "Over time, we have all seen with clarity that our nation is moving forward on issues of equal opportunity and fairness with a growing number of Americans supporting marriage equality."
Baldwin says the hearings are a step in the right direction. "The Court will decide whether gay American citizens can continue to be discriminated against simply because of who they love."
The Justices are not expected to hand down rulings in either case until the summer.
