Remaining lake ice is dangerous

ANTIGO, WI (WXPR) - Many Northwoods lakes have ice on them, and with the start of the inland fishing season this Saturday, the temptation might be to go out ice fishing. A warden says you should rethink that idea. DNR Recreational Safety Warden in Antigo Jeff Dauterman says with the recent spell of warm and windy weather, ice conditions aren't good. “It still might be fairly thick. I’ve heard in our area it’s over two feet thick, but the problem is that it’s really rotted ice. It’s not stable at all.”

Dauterman says don't go out on the ice. But, he says, if you do choose to go out, be prepared to go through the ice. “Definitely wear a life jacket, even under your coat, something to keep you floating so you’re not struggling to survive as soon as you drop through. Make sure people know that you’re out there. Carry some rope so you can rescue or help rescue somebody else. Just treat everything on the ice like you are going to fall through.” Last weekend, Lincoln county rescuers pulled three people from frozen Lake Alice near Tomahawk.
