Lutheran bishop to appear in court on charges of killing runner in drunk driving crash

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The ELCA Lutheran bishop for the Madison area is due back in court Monday on charges that he killed a runner while driving drunk in Sun Prairie.

Fifty-nine-year-old Bruce Burnside stepped aside from his post three weeks ago, after he checked into an inpatient treatment center.

Meanwhile, a Sun Prairie girls’ soccer team dedicated a recent game to the victim of the crash, Maureen Mengelt. The players raised money from T-shirt and concession sales, and donated $1,750 to Mengelt’s husband Kevin.

He gave the money to a fund in his wife’s honor.

Part of it will be used for programs that the Mengelt children participate in, like soccer, hockey, and music.

Kevin Mengelt told WISC-TV in Madison that the youngsters did some wonderful things, and he wanted to give something back to them and the community.

Also, the Mengelt family plans to hold a 5-kilometer run on Memorial Day in Sun Prairie. More details can be found online at MaureenMengelt.org.
