Wisconsin ranked 34th worst for heavy tax burden on businesses

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Only 16 states have lower business taxes than Wisconsin.

That’s according to a new study by the Anderson Economic Group of Michigan.

The firm’s researchers used tax data and Census reports to see how much businesses paid in 2011 for income, sales, excise, property, and other taxes.

Anderson economist Jason Horwitz said Wisconsin’s problem was the high amounts that businesses are paying into the state’s unemployment compensation fund.

Wisconsin is in the midst of paying back a $2 billion debt to the federal government to keep the state’s jobless benefits flowing during the Great Recession.

When that’s considered, Horwitz said Wisconsin’s business tax climate is comparable to other states.
