GORDON, WI (WSAU) - The large and dangerous wildfire that scorched over 9000 acres in just over 24 hours is under control.

Fire crews worked through the night completing fire lines and putting out hot spots, but the worst is over at the Germann Road Fire. Department of Natural Resources officials confirm 17 homes, 15 garages, 9 outbuildings, and 6 miscellaneous structures were destroyed. Governor Scott Walker has declared a state of emergency for Bayfield and Douglas Counties and plans to tour the damage this afternoon. In a statement Wednesday, Walker thanked the 37 fire departments, National Guard, U.S. Forest Service, plus those that assisted from Michigan, Minnesota, and the Province of Ontario for their help. Their efforts saved 77 buildings including 42 homes.

The Germann Road Fire east of Gordon and Solon Springs is the largest fire in Wisconsin since the Oak Lake Fire that burned over 11,400 acres in Washburn County on April 22, 1980.
