Boys & Girls Club Stevens Point will move, part of plan approved Monday

STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) -  The Boys and Girls Club of Stevens Point will be in a new home for 2014. That’s because the Stevens Point City Council approved one part of the two part plan Monday.

The portion of the plan approved includes a 30-year lease at one dollar a year for a large portion of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department building, which is in between P.J. Jacobs Junior High School and the soon-to-be vacated Mid-State Technical College building, and across the parking lot from Goerke Park and the municipal swimming pool.

Mayor Andrew Halverson says the portion of the deal leasing the Parks and Recreation building was approved. “We will be able to move forward in executing the lease agreement, but what they did not approve was a separate occupancy agreement which related to the south wing of that (Mid-State) building. That will not be acted on until after the August Common Council meeting.”

Some council members expressed concern about allowing the Boys and Girls Club occupancy of the south wing of the Mid-State building now since the city’s space study has not been completed. The city is considering moving city offices to the Mid-State building.

Passing the lease for the Parks and Recreation building gives assurances that the Boys and Girls Club will have a long term home in a very good location. Now they can pursue fundraising activities to facilitate the move and future site improvements.

Mid-State Technical College will be vacating their building next year when their new location is completed in the former Centerpoint Mall Penney’s wing.
