MADISON (WRN-WSAU)  Here's why "alfalfa" is a big deal for Wisconsin farmers this spring. There's a shortage of alfalfa to feed the cows on Wisconsin farms this spring, according to state Ag Secretary Ben Brancel. He says supplies are at only 53 percent of their normal levels, and it's affecting a lot of dairy operations.

Brancel says the shortage is due to last summer's prolonged drought, along with a lot of "winter kill" of alfalfa.

Brancel says many farmers have been forced to buy feed from out west or from Canada, increasing their production costs
