Southeast Wisconsin new home foreclosures fall year-to-year

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - New home foreclosure cases in southeast Wisconsin rose above 600 in October for the first time in seven months -- but the total was still down 27 percent from a year ago.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel counted 650 new court cases last month against those hopelessly behind on their mortgages. That's down from 887 cases last October in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington, Waukesha, Racine, Kenosha, and Walworth counties.

Experts say the increase above 600 cases might not be a big deal.

UW-Whitewater professor Russ Kashian says it might have resulted from bookkeeping patterns by lenders to start a new quarter. Kashian says the housing market in southeast Wisconsin appears to have stabilized.

Total foreclosure filings were close to what they were before the Great Recession.
