WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- U.S. Senator Ron Johnson is making appearances in central Wisconsin today. He was at Northcentral Technical College Friday afternoon, where he presented a program outlining federal trends in spending, revenue, the cost of Medicare and Social Security, and the effect of government over-regulation and intrusion on business.

Johnson said the Office of Budget and Management puts together ten year budget plans as a percentage of gross domestic product, but if you look at it in real dollars, the amount of debt Washington is passing down to our children and grandchildren is unacceptable.

The Senator took questions from members of the Wausau Area Chamber of Commerce. One question was about a government agency that is hiring up to 1000 more auditors, requiring more reports, and charging high fees to small businesses. Johnson believes this is an example of too much government. “We just have layer upon layer, we have hundreds of those types of regulations that really are burdening small businesses, job creators, large businesses, too, so if we really want to be able to create the opportunities, create the types of jobs to allow people to build that good life for themselves and family, we have to reduce that regulatory burden. We have to have a more competitive tax system. We’ve actually got to utilize our energy resources in this country. We’ve actually got to celebrate success rather than demonize it.”

The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare was brought up. Johnson remains committed to repealing the law. He did tell the group he was not in favor of the strategy that shut down the government two months ago.

The Senator is giving the same presentation to a group in Merrill Friday evening. The Senator says the more people learn about the federal government’s spending, the more optimistic he is the problems can be fixed. Johnson told the Wausau crowd his opponents keep promising things America can’t afford, and said it’s like free candy. He says it tastes really good, but then you get a cavity and you have to fix the cavity before you get an infection or abscess that can kill you.

Thursday, President Obama announced a one-year delay in adopting more comprehensive coverage standards for policies sold under Obamacare, effectively allowing people to keep their existing insurance for one more year. Johnson said it was too late to help those who've been cut off, and he again called for the repeal of the entire health law. Johnson said, "Dumping this top-down, Washington-style monstrosity is the only way to save our healthcare system from permanent damage."
