Thief is nuts about bolts

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - A thief is stealing something hard to notice, and potentially dangerous to innocent unsuspecting pedestrians.

Wausau Police Captain Ben Bliven says they were contacted by the Wausau Department of Public Works after they discovered large, expensive, stainless steel nuts and bolts were removed from pedestrian safety railings on the Washington and Bridge Street bridges.

It wasn’t just a few nuts and bolts. City officials estimate the thief took 137 bolts from the West Washington Street bridge, and nearly 100 nuts from the Bridge Street bridge.

Four more large bolts were removed from rails on the Dudley Tower.

Public Works officials are already working to replace the stolen hardware. They estimate the metal to have a value of around $415. It will take about $1,000 in extra labor cost to complete the repairs.

Officials with the Department of Public Works say the pedestrian railings are not at risk of tipping as a result of the missing nuts and bolts.

Investigators don’t know how someone could have taken so many without being seen. Police are encouraging witnesses to call in any leads and observations to Officer John Phillips at 715-261-7875.
