Hearing Wednesday on closing forest around proposed mine

by

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - A proposal to close thousands of acres of forest land surrounding a proposed mining site will have a public hearing Wednesday.

A bill in the Wisconsin Legislature by State Senators Glenn Grothman and Tom Tiffany would close nearly four thousand acres of Department of Natural Resources managed forest land in the Penokee Hills. Tiffany says the measure is necessary to protect mining workers from protesters.

Bob Seitz from Gogebic Taconite supports the bill saying it will protect the public from injury. Senator Bob Jauch and Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa leader Mike Wiggins say closing the forest goes too far and is unnecessary.

The Senate Committee on Mining will conduct the public hearing Wednesday at the Capitol beginning at 11:00 a.m.
