More details released about fatal Hwy 29 crash early Tuesday

PULASKI, Wis. (WSAU) - Authorities have released the name of the man killed in an early morning traffic crash in Shawano County. He was 35-year-old Keith L. Carpenter of Menasha. Carpenter was driving a black Mercury Mountaineer westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 29 when the crash occurred at 12:47 a.m. The SUV and the semi truck ended up in the median, and the SUV caught fire. Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shawano County investigators say Carpenter had passed the semi going eastbound at a high rate of speed, then apparently turned around near Highway 160 and approached the semi, turning his lights off before impact. The crash debris forced authorities to shut down Highway 29 for nearly six hours.

While the crash was under investigation, Menasha Police issued an “attempt to locate” call for Carpenter and his vehicle. Menasha officials wanted to arrest Carpenter for a domestic disturbance that occurred earlier in the evening.

The semi was driven by 42-year-old Scott Strom of Pulaski. 24-year-old Joseph Sobieski of Abrams was a passenger in the truck. Neither had serious injuries.

Several agencies managed the crash scene, including Shawano County Sheriff’s Department, Pulaski Police, Tri-County Fire Department, Bonduel Fire Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Shawano County Highway Department.
