Dead dogs found in Waupaca County home

SCANDINAVIA, Wis (WSAU)    Two people are under arrest after the carcasses of dogs were found at a home they were renting in Waupaca County.

Sheriffs deputies and an environmental officer from the Health Department went to the home after getting a tip from neighbors. The two people who’d been living there had just moved out.

The remains of at least four dogs and three puppies were found in the home. Some of the animals had died months ago and were badly decomposed.

Police questioned the renters, 34-year-old Teresa Spaeth and 20-year-old Joshua Gray. They said other dead dogs were in a freezer at the home. Those animals had died over the winter. The renters said they were being stored until the ground thawed for burial.

A police report says the dogs likely died of starvation. The two renters may have been evicted from the home, and left the animals behind to fend for themselves. The electricity at the home had been shut off for non-payment.

Spaeth and Gray are charged with mistreatment of animals causing death. They are now free on signature bond, and have been ordered not to have animals until their case is resolved. They’ll be back in court on September 26.
